Said goodbye two weeks ago to my beloved 15 year old Tobi

We lost Tobi two weeks ago today. I’ve been too devastated to even think of posting.

The first few pictures are of Tobi in his final hours on his last walk, and basking in the sun in his favourite bed on the deck near the water. The last few are of To I in his prime.

I’ve had Basset hounds my entire life, they hold such a special place in my heart. Tobi was my first dog as an adult, Draining my entire bank account the second I saw him knowing he would be the perfect companion and family dog.

Tobi guided us through every corner of our formative adult years. Starting out in a 1 bedroom apartment, moving to a rented home, then a townhome in the suburbs, before settling in his retirement home 5 years ago on a 1 acre waterfront lot outside the city. He was our guardian through several years of infertility and miscarriages, and a best friend to our children when they were born.

He was always there for me. I’m a volunteer firefighter in my community, and he was always at my side in the middle of the night after a rough call, calming me down and bringing me back down to earth. Returning home after a fire call will never feel the same.

The kids miss home so much, and my heart is broken for them. My daughter is 7, and for the last three years her birthday candle wish has been that Tobi would live forever.

Unfortunately Tobi will be my last basset for the foreseeable future. My daughter is allergic and we’ve been advised we should have something hypoallergenic for her health. Maybe one day.
