Basset hound puppy rarely settles

We got our second basset hound recently, I know it takes some time for them to adjust to a new environment and lifestyle. Just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to adjust to having an 8 week old puppy with a 1 year old basset around as well.

Our older basset is an absolute angel who adjusted to her crate, potty training, and honestly never was really whiney. This time around it’s been a little more difficult which is understandable every dog is different. Looking for tips on how to get a puppy to cope with being crate trained and actually following a nap schedule while another dog is around. We’ve tried separate areas, covering the crate, making the crate a positive place but she just yelps like crazy. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a sound like it. I feel so bad and we don’t let her cry it out because I’ve read it creates more anxiety. We are just so tired and want to make sure we don’t cause any behavioral issues by doing anything the wrong way. I’ve read hundreds of articles by now but hoping someone has had a similar experience and can help us see the tunnel at the end of the road.

When she does sleep she is stinkin cute though lol the oldest is Bonnie and the baby is Judy

What I Came Home to After Work Last Night

It’s been a rough week at work and coming home to Cannoli is always so rewarding. I only cut the video off so we could snuggle, and let me tell you, they were SUPREME snuggles. Sat on the stair below him and those jowels were right up in my face, on my shoulder, he was licking my ears. I love my boy so so much. Dunno what I’d do without this darling.

Training Rescue Basset

I just adopted a basset mix (build is pure Basset). I have never owned this breed and I can’t seem to train him to sit the normal ways I have other dogs. It seems like it’s related to his height and size. Any guidance or suggestions unique to this breed?

Should I get a Basset Hound?

Hi everyone, I need some advice. Please give it to me straight.

My husband and I live in a calm and quiet, somewhat rural area. We have a fenced in back yard and go on plenty of outdoor hikes with our dogs on leash. We have stairs leading up to every entrance to our house, and stairs in our house that go between the floors. We currently have one dog, Arthur, who is a half Golden Retriever, half Great Pyrenees. (A mutt, but an energetic big sweet one!) We have a cat too who tends to be a little spicy with the dogs, but is not afraid of them at all. We want a dog that will be a good companion to us and to Arthur. Arthur is still grieving after losing his brother a few months ago so we are going to wait and give him time, but we want a dog that will fit into our life style and want to make the right decision. Our dog who passed away was a Newfoundland so Arthur is used to playing and wrestling with a very large sturdy dog. Arthur is a pawsy player, as that was how our previous dog was and taught him everything he knows! However, Arthur is turning 5 and slowing down quite a bit.

Cons I’ve heard about Bassets: -they are loud (we live in a rural area so not too concerned about this) -they are stubborn and notoriously bad with recall -they can smell bad (oily coat, lots of folds, prone to ear infections and skin infections) -due to their long body, stairs can be hard on their backs

Pros I’ve heard about Bassets: -they loves to hang out on the couch (Arthur does too) -they are extremely sweet and goofy and friendly with other animals -they are super cute (obviously) -they are often very laid back

So here are my big concerns: how will a Basset handle all the stairs? How will a Basset handle playing with Arthur? Are these reasons to try and get a larger dog breed that more matches Arthur’s size and way of playing? I’m used to grooming a Newfoundland so the grooming and smell dogs can have doesn’t worry me, but is this a bigger issue than I’m thinking? Do Hounds really stink?
