Are bassets hard to train?

I’ve been getting some “grief” about letting mine off leash (in a couple of fb basset groups), I’m lucky she didn’t run away, how I have a “unicorn” for a basset, etc. She actually does pretty well, but I’ve been working with her since we 1st got her at 10 weeks. We still have a ways to go, but she’s come a long way. I was surprised how well she did at the off leash park, where in the past she just takes off after other dogs. This time she stayed fairly close, within eye sight, and came when called. Also yesterday on our walk she resisted the urge to chase a squirrel until it crossed our path and up a tree which was close. I find when she doesn’t listen is when she’s overstimulated, or tired. Been firm from the get go, reward her with treats when she listens and lots of praise, also more stubborn than her. I just work with her basset instincts like the need to track and investigate no matter how long she needs. Our last basset I never leashed, and never had any issues. But she was 5 when we got her and a rescue from a puppy mill, so think she was just grateful to be in a home. Are they really that hard to train? Or do they just get a bad rap for stubbornness? I just find it takes time, a little longer than other dogs, and patience
