Hi all- Maybelle is my first basset hound and I love her to pieces. She’s currently 8 months old. However, I’m having an issue I don’t know how to fix.
I’ve had her since she was 2 months old and once she had her shots I took her on walks and tried to socialize her as much as possible. She loved greeting people and was even excited to see our neighbors when we took her outside to pee. But suddenly about the 6ish month mark she did a 180. She started to “boof” at our neighbors instead- the same ones she knows and has seen since she was a pup. Little warning barks in her throat that never really came out to barks. We didn’t think much of it at first but that has only escalated into full on barking, thrashing, pulling and insane behavior to get at them outside. I used to be able to talk to my neighbors with her at my side but now we can’t even chat since she is trying her best to – honestly idk? Warn them away? It doesn’t seem aggressive- it seems fearful. If anybody walks towards her instead of away she runs in the other direction.
It’s the same with walks. A dog that used to pull to get near people is now barking and holding her ground. I love going on trails and want to take her with me, but if somebody is walking by I can’t get her attention. I’ve tried squeaky toys, sounds, treats- nothing will get her attention off that person/dog. Honestly I could work with it if it was just dog reactivity but the people reactivity is frustrating. She’s almost 50 lbs right now and it’s hard to hold her back when she’s trying to tear my arm off on a walk (or even in the backyard) when she sees somebody else. But it isn’t aggression on walks either- I had two teens brave her yesterday and she was just incredibly happy and excited to get pet! (After she realized they weren’t there to hurt her and came down on her level) But she barks and reacts like she’s going to do something- which scares everybody away.
Nothing traumatic has ever happened either. No angry people, no aggressive dogs- nothing.
With it getting warmer, it’s only getting worse with more people on the trails and more neighbors coming outside. Has anybody ever dealt with this behavior before with their basset? Any tips or tricks to get their attention when they’re 100% on somebody else?
