Does it get better?

I have a gravity feeder for my basset hound pup. Literally every time he eats food, he’ll take a bite of food, then go drink water, then come back and eat the food. His food is always dropping in his water bowl. It’s gotten to the point I don’t even fill the water side up anymore because I know he will get a bunch of food in it and I have to clean it out after a day.

Also whenever he eats, there’s literally food everywhere on the floor. It goes everywhere ever single time. No fail. He also drops water everywhere.

Does it get better or is this just one of the quirks of owning a basset hound?

Wondering any tips, tricks, difficulty, length of training, starting points etc.

Thinking of getting the puppy into maybe shed hunting, deer (blood trail) tracking.

Yes I’m aware of the breed characteristics when it comes to this type of thing, which is why I’m reaching out for advice.
