Basset Hounds for You

hello! i so appreciate the encouragement on my last post about my sweet girl ginny. i have a young kitty, who’s been with me her whole life and is quite the princess. the dog chases her, often climbing on top of her and biting her. my puppy weighs a lot more than her – she is a petite cat. the puppy is playing, but i feel strongly that she could seriously injure my beloved cat. the cat often cries out in pain when the puppy is being rough. I yell at the puppy and she will back off for a moment, then go right back to tackling the cat. i don’t mind them playing, the cat often instigates it actually, but again it’s too rough. the cat does not use her claws or set firm-enough boundaries. i am tired of supervising a dangerous and never ending game – at this point they are never in the same space. it seems to get worse the more i separate them and i wonder if im making the cat seem like something special by doing so. My hope – once she is older and becomes a log on the couch – she won’t be so interested in hunting my cat. but at 5 months old it remains her favorite and most terrifying form of entertainment. i am open to any thoughts/suggestions!!

Hello, This is Ginny. My 5 month old basset. I have had her for about two months and we are not making much progress potty training. Situation kind of sucks. I live in an upstairs apartment – it goes directly out into a court yard where she goes – no walk necessary for a quick potty. However I need to carry her down the stairs. They are way too steep for a basset to safely go down. Hopefully moving to a downstairs apartment before she’s full grown. However, I will likely live an apartment for most, if not all her life where she won’t have quick access to a back yard. I bring her to my parent’s house often, and she doesn’t go inside nearly as much because she has easy access to the back yard. I take her out as freaquently as I can. She often goes pee as I am putting my shoes on. Bottom line is, she must learn to hold it until I bring her out, or scratch at the door. Im pretty good at predicting when she might need to go, but Im not perfect. I bought a button for the door that rings, but I can’t train her to push it with treats, let alone push it when she needs to go potty. I think going to the door will come naturally with learning she can’t go inside. She never goes in her crate, which she sleeps in for 8 hours. occasionally she is in her crate for up to 4 hours during the day. So I know that she knows how to “hold it”. Getting her to hold it outside the crate however, I’m lost.

After having a pack of 4 Beagles, age made me switch over to the Basset. The 4 months old male is joining the pack of a 2-year and 5-year old female Beagles. Contrary to the active Beagles, the unhurried Basset takes it easy all the time…

I adopted a basset this month, after mine had to be put down earlier this year. My new basset was really good with my bunny as he was raised around cats. Never really minded him or did much and they even seemed to be friends as my basset always checks on him. But two things happened today and yesterday. Yesterday he got the zoomies and tried to play with him but it raised some red flags, secondly I just fed my basset and my bunny went up to his food bowl just curious and he growled. My mom instincts kicked in and I separated both of them and moved the food bowl as well as my bunny. I really hope these are one offs. Because it breaks my heart that I thought I found another family member 😔

My sweet boy we got last night-everything is going very well so far! 2 months but so large already!
