Hi everyone! I have a 1 and a half year old basset mix. Her mother was pure basset and we think the dad was chihuahua… i know. I adopted her from a basset rescue i briefly worked for so i only really know of her mom. (The mother was rescued while pregnant)

Anyway. Ive had smart dogs. Very smart dogs. But i have never had a dog leave me speechless as much as she does. Her comprehension skills shock me everyday. I haven’t even attempted teaching tricks but she just does what i ask if i show her first. Her willingness to listen must have come from dad because she has not even a spec of that basset stubbornness we all talk about.

Because I’ve known her from the start i know she has no training. This is just how she is. So i wanted to open a conversation here. Ive seen people say bassets aren’t smart because they don’t listen. And then I’ve seen people respond by saying they are very smart but choose not to listen. I personally believe its the later. So. What does everyone think about basset intelligence? Am i only being surprised by my girl because she somehow didn’t inherit the stubbornness? Because sometimes i think she actually understands english. It occasionally crosses the line into creepy lol

My time at the rescue makes me feel that they are highly intelligent. Because those dogs would pull anything to trick you into handing them a treat.

We tried a different park this morning where I ran into a coworker. She said to take Daisy to the island and let her off leash there, so I did. She made a bee line to the water.

Even our other basset doesn’t get up when I come home.

Then as she was walking away she almost tripped because of the hole under the trampoline that my sister’s dog, Nova (Pyrenees Anatolian Shepherd mix) dug.

I saw a post today and one of the basset hounds reminded me of my dog, Jett Jett. We only had Jett Jett for just over a year because he was a senior when we rescued him and there were health issues. He was such a good boy and had the softest ears. My only regret was not being able to say goodbye. Chester passed 5 or 6 years ago now, he was surrounded by family when we put him to sleep. He told us he was ready. He lost the use of his back legs and couldn’t control his bowel movements anymore. He was 12 years old. He was loved and cherished to the very end.
