Does your Bassett ever lock themselves in a room and than start barking?

So my Basset/Beagle if not being given enough attention will walk into a room, slam the door behind him and then start barking for you to let him out. When you do he’ll normality leave the room but sometimes will just go right back in and do the same thing. Ive tried swatting him to discourage him, doesn’t help. I’ve tried leaving him locked in there for a period of time, doesnt help. It really sucks when someone is house sitting because they think they have lost him lol. Does anyone else deal with this? Solutions?

New basset mom – best practices?

We just adopted a basset hound, and she is the sweetest thing. She’s been through a lot – she was abandoned by a backyard breeder and left without food or water in the Texas heat for nearly 2 weeks. When I got her, I actually had misunderstood her and thought they had only been left alone for three days, but that was how long she had had them. These poor dogs were left for two weeks before my cousin found them.

A couple of things: I’ve always loved dogs, but I am not a high energy person, and the last time I had a dog, I was a teenager. This is 20 years later. My dad had gotten me that dog, and he wasn’t a good owner, and didn’t set a good example.

So, I want to spoil this dog. (Within reason).

She has her first vet appointment Monday, and right now I’m looking for a reputable groomer who has experience with neglected dogs.

So, what is the best food for her? I hear a lot about Blue Buffalo, and I’d like to know what extras I can add to her food, like eggs, or chicken or whatever is left over from cooking.

Are those frozen meals I see at the store worth the cost?

All this while obviously maintaining a healthy weight for her.

Help me out Ladybird in the lap of luxury. ❤️

literally the best boy ever! :-)

I feel the need to brag a bit —
Sheldon is 4 — he was our pandemic puppy because I really (really!) needed something to take care of — but he has actually taken care of me. 🙂
The kids are older and they don’t need me as much.

No one in my real life understands bassets and their personalities…. so that is why today I feel like I need to gush over this guy.

He is a crate sleeping dog. I knew that he could be destructive and counter surf so we decided to crate train him as a puppy. I slept next to the crate for the first week or so then moved farther away, used a baby monitor, etc etc.
Now he LOVES his crate. He goes in at 9 or 10 and stays until woken up at 6:30 or 7 am.

Last night we forgot to put him in his crate. Completely forgot.
This morning, I get up at 5 like normal, make coffee, do some kitchen things and sit down at the computer to work.
I hear very very low basset hound whining.
So I figure he drank a lot of water yesterday (hottish day and I gave him ice cubes with parm cheese in them so he’d really have extra water 😉 ) so I un-do the house alarm and then go to let him out of his crate.

he is LOOSE on the playroom couch. He could have gotten up at ANY TIME but instead he just stayed there — like such a GOOD BOY until I told him it was time to get up.

I think this is just the most amazing and craziest wonderful thing and I’m just so proud of him!!!

Bloat, while alone

Hi all,

As I continue to prep for my new buddy’s arrival, I’ve been lurking, reading and watching everything I can.

So GDV, or bloat as I’m told it’s commonly called, can supposedly be avoided by ensuring the dog is calm and not breathing hard / no major physical activity for approx 30 mins before and after a meal. In addition to slow feeding if said dog eats every meal like it’s their last.

Now I think a frozen Kong with PB or some such safe and acceptable treat will be good for mental stimulation while I’m out of the house. I’m concerned that he may get a case of the zoomies right after eating the Kong contents or even out of excitement just before.

I know the frozen Kong isn’t going to be wolfed down super quick, and I’m not keen on crating him for extended periods. We’re talking a standard workday (once a week).

Is this a legitimate concern? When you leave your bassets home along do you leave food l, water or food games out? What do you leave them with to stimulate them for at least a little while?
