Does anyone else’s Basset try to eat a bunch of crap when out for a walk? Dirt clods are the latest craze. 🙄 If you are seeing this in your Basset, what do you do to curb the behavior?

We got our baby Cora in July and just the past few months she’s been crazy, very vocal, and loves running for long periods of time. And what I mean by crazy is that she loves to play with her brother Teddi, who is 7 years old and is a pitbull. Is our other dog the reason why she’s has been crazy or is it just how they all are?

I don’t know a lot about basset hounds and I’m just simply curious !

My 5 month old Bassett has taken to peeing in his crate and I cannot figure out what to do to help him stop. Overall he is doing amazing with potty training. He rarely has pee accidents in the house and he has never pooped in the house! He sleeps 10-12 hours every single night without getting up for a pee break.

I started crate training immediately! I am athletic and participate in a lot of races for my sport in the summertime and fall which involves multi state travel. I stay in a fully decked out, climate controlled camper van and wanted to start him early so he can tag along to the events and be crated when he is unsupervised. My first week of having him was my final race and I took him along and he did amazing. In the beginning he was so good in his crate! Once I accidentally left him in for over 5 hours ( auto shop told me a job would take two hours and it took over 4 ) and he had no accidents! The past month and a half though he pees his crate at least 50% of the time.

So far ive tried:

-cutting back the amount of time hes in the crate. Before I would try to go no more than 3-3.5 hours. Then 2.5, then 2…. but even less than one hour he pees. I am beginning to think its not a bladder control issue.

-taking out the bed/pad at the bottom to remove the absorbent layer, leaving just a blanket and a few toys. My thought was without the layer to absorb the pee he would be discouraged to make his space wet..

covering the crate. Its a canvas travel crate thats collapsible as opposed to a wire crate, so its already sort of blocking out some light. I cover the mesh screens leaving one exposed for ventilation.

-crating daily. I am home most days of the week and several days I dont even leave to run errands. I try to do an hour of crate time while I do chores/shower etc.

I usually stop water at least an hour before crating with a minimum of TWO pee breaks before crating. He always pees when I take him out, he is such a good boy!

Nothing is seeming to help and I feel bad he keeps peeing! I want him to feel safe and cozy in his crate. I am thinking maybe it is a separation anxiety thing and I am hoping someone can offer some advice to help me out. I want to make him feel more comfy in his crate so that he stops peeing!

We welcomed a new puppy a couple months ago, named Timmy. The rescue told us he was a beagle mix but after DNA results he is 50% Bassett, 50% other mixed breeds, and 0% beagle! We love him 100% though! So far he seems to be a typical puppy but since this is our first Bassett mix any tips/advice for this breed specifically? This sub has been really helpful and I especially love seeing all the Basset pics!!

Stanley turns 14 this month. It has been an incredible journey. Doesn’t always want to use the doggy door and barks when he wants me to open it. Very picky eater now and I feed him much differently compared to the past.
