So I am re crate training my 5 month old basset hound puppy and I don’t know if it’s me or it’s not going good. This is the first dog I’ve ever crate trained. I tried crate training him at first but then couldn’t sleep because I’m a really light sleeper and I have a 15 month old that needs sleep or will be grouchy so then kinda failed at it and since I’ve never done it in my life or any of my parents/in laws never have I had no clue what to do so I definitely did it the wrong way. Well 4 1/2 months in we are re crate training because my trainer told us to because he started resource guarding and he needs to work on behavioral issues before getting rewarded. My trainer said since he resource guards his food to not feed him in the crate because it could make it worse and he won’t eat in the crate anyway or even lick a Kong, I’m assuming because he’s stressed. I’m doing all the positive reinforcement and throwing treats in there, making it cozy, covering it with a blanket, trying to give him something to lick to calm him down, making sure he’s exercised, has went potty, and nothing is working. I also put him in during the day while I’m home and when I leave. He will whine in there and bark for like 5 minutes and be done. When he wants out, he will start whining again, be quiet for a short period of time, whine again later. I completely ignore the whining until I’m ready to get him out then will give him a treat once he’s out. I’ve been re crate training for about 3 weeks now and he’s still whining/barking. He also won’t go in willingly, but will sometimes go in when I say “kennel”. I know they are vocal and stubborn dogs but am I doing something wrong or do bassets just hate the crate? I’m also due with another baby Dec 2025 and would like to have him trained with the crate by then so I’m not super stressed out.
Wanted to add his schedule that we normally stick to: 7:40-8 wake up and immediately go potty 8:15- eat breakfast which I hand feed because of the resource guarding Out until my son wakes then back in kennel at 9:30 so my son can eat breakfast then he immediately gets out Potty again and play until about 10:30-11 then nap time for him for 2-3 hours until about 12-12:30 Out until my son wakes up for nap which is normally 3pm During nap, I train him on commands and train him for his kennel and nap for him which is free roam Back in kennel while my son eats lunch and immediately out after he’s done Outside time or screened in porch time to play until 4:30-5 Dinner at 5 which I hand feed Out until we eat dinner which is between 6 and 7pm In kennel while we eat then immediately out And out until bed which is 9-9:30pm
