Note: This is an update post. On my page you can find the original posts I’ve made about him. He was basically a rescue.
Tldr: we took him to the vet. He got all his shots and everything checked out, he is a healthy boy. Owner lied about a lot
We went to the vet yesterday. He got all checked out and he’s a healthy boy! They did the standard check of everything. We told the vet our whole story and that the original owner we got him from lied about a few things. Here’s what all we went over.
First his skin. I showed him a picture when we first got him to show the hair loss. A lot of it has grown back. I told him we’ve been using head and shoulders 2 in 1 (so shampoo and conditioner) it sounded like he’s heard of people using it before. He said he thinks it’s flea allergies and that it’s been bad this year. I told him I wanted to make sure it wasn’t mange. He gave us a flea pill that would take care of mange if he had it. It also will help treat any kind of worms if he has them, including heart worms. I told the vet I haven’t seen anything in his poop but better safe than sorry.
His eyes. I have noticed that his eyes are very runny. I asked the vet about it. He said it tends to be a hound issue. Dust and sand gets in them and causes irritation. Our whole yard is nothing but dirt and woods so that definitely makes sense. Thankfully my husband works at tractor supply co so we got the eye drops covered.
His ears. The vet did clean his ears. They were very dirty. I’m paranoid about messing with his ears. I didn’t know their ear drum is at and angle and hard to hit. She showed me how to clean them and what to use. He LOVED it. I mean making noises and about to fall asleep. It definitely felt good to him so I’ll make sure to start doing it for him.
His age. So his paperwork has his birthday on it. It’s registered and everything. The thing is, he lied about so much that I find it hard to trust it. The vet said he’s definitely over a year but his teeth look good. We got the estimation that hes 1 1/2 – 3 years old. The paper looked official but he’s the only dog I have papers on so I wouldn’t know a fake one if I saw it. I should have brought it to the vet to see what they thought but I didn’t think about it till we were there.
His shots. So the original owner lied about taking him to the vet. I called the vet he said he took him to but they didn’t have any information on him and couldn’t find his records. My husband asked the owner about it and the owner said he was mistaken and it was a different vet in another county and couldn’t remember the name of the vet. I guess he thought we wouldn’t call and just take his word for the shots. Oh and btw his others dogs are in the system at the original vet I called. But there wasn’t a dog with his name in their files. Soooo while we were at the vet he got all the shots he needed. Once again, better safe than sorry.
We also have his neuter appointment set for October.
All and all I’m so so so glad we got him and he’s not with the original owner. I personally feel like his health and happiness was neglected with his original owner. It baffles me that someone would spend $500 on a dog and then not care about him. He’s now at a healthy weight, we can no longer see his hip and rib bones. From what I’m told about dogs and healthy weights is your supposed to be able to feel the ribs but not see them. You could also see his spine before. Now you can’t. His hair is growing back and getting soft and shinny again. He looks like a completely different Bassett. I’ll include pics to show his progress. The first one is when we first got him. We have been able to see his personality more. He’s not aggressive with food. I have seen him and my dachshund eat out of the same food bowl. That was a big issue I was worried about. Since he’s not fixed and is constantly trying to hump my other dog, we don’t allow them to be alone together. Sadly this means he is usually tied up and doesn’t get much roaming freedom but I take him around the yard to sniff everything a few times a day and he walks everyday. If y’all have any suggestions on how to train him not to pull on the leash I would love to hear them. My dachshund did the same thing but we got him a special harness that helps him with it. I’ll keep updates going. I’m just happy hes happy. Thank yall for the help so far.
